Contents

In this guide, we'll walk through the installation of Autopsy, a powerful open-source digital forensics tool, on a Windows system. Autopsy allows investigators to analyze disk images, recover deleted files, and extract important data. Before you begin, make sure Java is installed on your system as it’s required for Autopsy to run. The guide will cover everything from downloading and installing Autopsy to running your first forensic case.

Step 1: Java Dependency

  • Java Dependency: Autopsy requires Java to run. If you don’t have Java installed, the Autopsy installer will prompt you to install it, or you can download and install it manually from the Oracle website.

Step 2: Download Autopsy

  1. Visit the Official Autopsy Website:

Step 3: Run the Installer

  1. Locate the Installer:
    • After the download is complete, navigate to the folder where the installer was saved (usually in the Downloads folder).
  2. Run the Installer:
    • Double-click on the installer file and follow the installation prompts.

Additional Notes

  • Third-Party Modules: Autopsy supports third-party modules and plugins. After installation, you can install and configure these as needed.

Once you’ve completed the steps, Autopsy will be ready to use on your Windows system, allowing you to start your forensic investigations.
